I've looked up several solutions online to this problem, and the most common one was as follows, which I tried (among others): 1. Disconnect A/C power supply 2. Shut down computer 3. However, this time the Microsoft ACPI did NOT reinstall upon restarting the computer and now I am left without any battery indicator at all.
